Where Would Increased K-12 Education Funding Leave Kentucky's State Universities?

U of L student body president Carrie Mattingly says she's planning multiple trips to the state capitol this year to advocate for more higher education funds.

As the University of Louisville's student government president, Carrie Mattingly's job is to be the voice of her peers—and she said tuition increases hurt student wallets. But so do other costs associated with college.

“Housing has gotten to be a really sizable cost," she said. "If you don’t plan for it it’s really difficult to cover that with a part time job."

It took one, very long sleepless night to complete that crystal-encrusted costume.

“Jesus,” Terrance Williams says. “We stayed up all night putting diamonds on that black shirt.”

Williams’ best friend, Cheryl Williamson, was competing in the 2011 Miss Omega Pageant at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, and she demanded perfection before she’d take the stage.

“I always go to that video and watch it,” he says. “We all do, actually. It’s pretty funny.”

WKU Loses in Little Caesars Bowl, 24-21

In college football, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers fell to Central Michigan 24-21 in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl Wednesday night in Detroit.

With less than a minute left in the fourth quarter, WKU passed up an opportunity for a game-tying field goal on fourth down, instead attempting a pass play deep in Central Michigan territory. But the Chippewas broke up the play to secure the victory.

Western Kentucky finishes the season with a 7-6 record. The Hilltoppers were led by interim coach Lance Guidry , who took over when Willie Taggart left for South Florida.

Outwardly, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers' 34-14 victory over McNeese State was a cause for big-time celebration for WKU President Gary Ransdell.

The Toppers won the 2002 Division I-AA national championship.

Inwardly, the championship stirred another reaction. The playoffs for the I-AA division -- now known as the Football Championship Subdivision -- had cost WKU money. The first-round playoff game drew just 3,300 people to Bowling Green's Smith Stadium. The title game had no payout.
