Maryland Beats Louisville 76-73, Advances to Women's NCAA Final Four

Maryland has advanced to the Terrapins' first NCAA women's Final Four since winning the 2006 national championship, holding off Louisville 76-73 Tuesday night in the Cardinals' home arena.       

U of L's Shoni Schimmel scored 31 points in her final game as a Cardinal, missing a tying 3-pointer off the back rim just before the buzzer. Louisville (33-5) missed a chance for a second straight Final Four with the Cardinals' season ending shy of the national championship game they lost a year ago.

Schimmel, Teammates "Enjoying the Game of Basketball," as U of L Aims for Final Four Berth

In college basketball, the Louisville Cardinals will try to reach their second straight women’s NCAA Final Four Tuesday night when they take on Maryland at the KFC Yum Center.     

The Cards, led by senior guard Shoni Schimmel, are seeded third in the tournament and have soundly defeated their first three opponents.  

"I’m just letting the game come to me.   I’m having fun.  It’s been a blast these past couple of games.   We’re just enjoying the game of basketball.  I’m having fun just playing what I love to do," Schimmel said Sunday.

NCAA: U of L Women Beat LSU, Advance to Elite Eight

Shoni Schimmel scored 19 points, Tia Gibbs added five 3-pointers and third-seeded Louisville rolled seventh-seeded LSU 73-47 on Sunday to reach the regional final of the NCAA tournament.

Facing an injury-riddled Tigers squad that dressed just eight players, the Cardinals (33-4) rung up another rout highlighted by a season-best 12 3-pointers with the two seniors leading the way. Schimmel was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and three other Cardinals contributed.

Women's NCAA: Kentucky Gets Past Syracuse, 64-59

Bria Goss scored 17 points and third-seeded Kentucky survived No. 6 seed Syracuse 64-59 on Monday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Goss went 11 of 12 from the foul line as the Wildcats (26-8) ground out a victory two days after beating Wright State by 46 points. Syracuse's physical play and its 2-3 zone defense had a lot to do with disrupting Kentucky's rhythm and scoring opportunities in a 36-percent shooting performance.

Western Kentucky Falls to Baylor in Women's NCAA Tournament

In their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2008, the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers lost Saturday to the Baylor Bears.

Western Kentucky end the season with a 24-9 record that included a Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship. It was the second season for head coach Michelle Clark-Heard, a former Western Kentucky player and Louisville Cardinals assistant coach.

Junior forward Chastity Gooch led Western Kentucky with 23 points, but two Baylor players—Nina Davis and Odyssey Sims—scored just over 30. Baylor won 87-74.

Kentucky Wildcats Dominate Wright State in Women's NCAA Tournament

The Kentucky Wildcats women's basketball team made advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament look easy on Saturday.

The Wildcats crushed Wright State 106-60 in Lexington's Memorial Coliseum. Kentucky, a No. 3 seed, improved to 25-8 and next plays third-seed Syracuse or 11th-seed Chattanooga on Monday night.

Louisville Cardinals to Play for Women's National Championship

The University of Louisville women’s basketball team has joined the men’s program in playing for a NCAA championship this week.

Antonita Slaughter led the fifth-seeded Cards with 18 points as U of L advanced to the title game with a 64-57 comeback victory tonight over number two seed California.

U of L will face Connecticut for the women’s championship Tuesday in New Orleans.  The Huskies defeated Notre Dame in the other national semifinal.

Louisville Cardinals Earn a Spot in the Women's Final Four

The Louisville Cardinals women's basketball team pulled another upset Tuesday night to earn a spot in the Final Four.

U of L topped the Tennessee Lady Vols 86-78 in Oklahoma City.

In winning, the No. 5 seed Cardinals beat a better-seeded team for the third straight game—No. 4 seed Purdue, No. 1 seed Baylor and the second-seeded Tennessee.

Shoni Schimmel led the Cardinals with 24 points.
