Tomorrow: Help Clean Up Floyds Fork

Volunteers will be gathering at Floyds Fork Creek tomorrow to clean up the waterway. This is the 22nd annual Floyds Fork Creek Sweep.Over the past 22 years, volunteers have removed 120 tons of garbage from Floyds Fork during the annual Creek Sweep. This year, they’ll canvas the waterway in canoes and on foot, working to clean up debris.Teena Halbig is the president of the Floyds Fork Environmental Association. She says the creek sweep is a chance to clean up a section of the creek…but also to learn about the area’s biodiversity.  Halbig says local birders will accompany the volunteers, and one made a preliminary trip recently to scope out the area.“She identified over 52 different species, and then she walked around Floyds Fork Park and identified another 10,” Halbig said. “So we’re very rich in having a great number of species of birds.”Mayor Greg Fischer and Councilmen Stuart Benson, Robin Engel and Jerry Miller will also address the volunteers. The creek sweep begins tomorrow morning at 8am at Floyds Fork Park (4002 S. Pope Lick Road). Some canoes are provided, but volunteers can also bring their own. For more information, call Teena Halbig at 502-267-6883 or email teenahal@aol.com.
