U of L Approved For Fellowship In Child Abuse Pediatrics

The University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics has been granted permission by a national accreditation council to offer a fellowship to doctors in child abuse pediatrics. The three-year program is one of 25 in the country dealing with physical and sexual child abuse, neglect, prevention and advocacy.Fellowship director Dr. Lisa Pfitzer says it will function much like a physician’s residency, with emphasis on clinical work. She says the doctors can use the experience to train others and put it to work in their own practices."We like to think this will really broaden our network of service providers for these cases," Pfitzer said.More than 14,000 cases of child abuse and neglect are reported each year in Kentucky, involving as many as 40 fatalities.
