UK Board of Trustees Approves 6 Percent Tuition Increase

For the ninth consecutive year, students at the University of Kentucky will be asked to dig deeper to pay for their education. The UK Board of Trustees today voted to raise tuition and fees at the state’s flagship university an additional 6 percent beginning next fall.Tuition for in-state students will rise from just over $9100 per year, to more than $9600 next academic year. UK President Eli Capilouto says the hikes are only part of the equation.“We had a state cut of over 6 percent, some $20 million,” he said. “It was mitigated somewhat by the reallocation that we’re doing such that our academic units will face cuts of 3.3 percent. Our administrative units are going to have to do a heavier lift of doing cuts of 5 percent.”

Capilouto emphasized that if lawmakers keep educational funding levels at their current level next year, the university will only need to ask the Council on Postsecondary Education to approve a 3 percent tuition hike for the 2013 academic year.
