The Unbearable Lightness of 'Redshirts'

John Scalzi is the best-selling science fiction author whose books, including "Old Man's War," have been nominated for multiple Hugo Awards. Scalzi served as creative consultant for the "Stargate: Universe" television series and he has written several nonfiction books, including "The Rough Guide to the Universe." He’s also an influential online personality whose blog “Whatever” has been active since 1998.Scalzi’s new novel is “Redshirts,” a meta-narrative about the expendable crew members of a spaceship that has a lot in common with Star Trek’s The Enterprise. WFPL’s Erin Keane caught up with him last weekend at Fandom Fest (where he wore a red shirt). They talked about nerd culture, storytelling, video games and how science fiction saved the world.
