Unbound: Matt Bell and Brian Leung on 'Far Away, So Close'

On today’s episode, we’ll consider the distance between two people. What keeps a couple bound together, and what drives them apart?  In Matt Bell's “For You We Are Holding,” a city throbs with missed connections and swells with the memories of all that we want and what we have lost. Then, an estranged wife returns home to a sick dog and brings hope with her in Brian Leung's “Dog Sleep.”Today's authors:Matt Bell’s debut novel, In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods, was just published by Soho Press. Bell is the author of Cataclysm Baby, a novella, and How They Were Found, a collection of fiction. His stories have appeared in many magazines, including Conjunctions, Hayden’s Ferry Review and Gulf Coast, and have been selected for inclusion in anthologies such as Best American Mystery Stories and Best American Fantasy. Bell teaches creative writing at Northern Michigan University, and is senior editor at Dzanc Books, where he also runs the literary magazine The Collagist.Brian Leung is the author of the novels Take Me Home and Lost Men, and the story collection World Famous Love Acts, named an Editor’s Choice pick by Entertainment Weekly and winner of the Asian American Literary Award and the Mary McCarthy Award from Sarabande Books. His work has been published in Story, Crazyhorse, Gulf Coast, Mid-American Review, Indiana Review, and many other journals. Leung is the recipient of the Lambda Literary Award for Outstanding Mid-career Novelist. A native of San Diego, he teaches creative writing at the University of Louisville. The eighth episode of Unbound airs at 7 p.m. Wednesday. It features Silas House and Manuel Gonzales.
