UofL Adds LGBT Training to Medical School Curriculum

The University of Louisville School of Medicine has become the first in the country to include specific training for the treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients and those born with differences of sex development, the school announced last month.

The pilot program will be developed with assistance from physicians at Harvard, Vanderbilt and Ohio State universities.

Amy Holthouser, U of L assistant dean for medical education, said health outcomes for LGBT and DSD populations tend to be worse due to increased health risks, marginalization by society, estrangement from family and other factors.

"The training will really focus on all aspects of interaction with the patient as well as the physicians interaction with the healthcare system to make the system fair and equitable to all patients," she said.

UoL will begin implementing the curriculum during the 2015-2016 academic year.

“The day that a patient who identifies as LGBT or DSD can go to any doctor and feel comfortable bringing up any issues without fear or judgment is the day that we will really start to make a difference in the health disparities affecting this population," she said.
