U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio to Speak at UofL's McConnell Center

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio will speak later this month at the University of Louisville via the McConnell Center.Rubio, elected to the Senate from Florida in 2010, gave the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address and is an oft-mentioned contender for the GOP's 2016 presidential nomination.Rubio, 41, is associated with the Tea Party movement. In the GOP State of the Union Response—which drew wide attention when Rubio took an awkward drink of water—Rubio outlined beliefs on small government.

This idea – that our problems were caused by a government that was too small – it's just not true. In fact, a major cause of our recent downturn was a housing crisis created by reckless government policies. And the idea that more taxes and more government spending is the best way to help hardworking middle class taxpayers – that's an old idea that's failed every time it's been tried. More government isn't going to help you get ahead. It's going to hold you back. More government isn't going to create more opportunities. It's going to limit them. And more government isn't going to inspire new ideas, new businesses and new private sector jobs. It's going to create uncertainty. Because more government breeds complicated rules and laws that a small business can't afford to follow.

Rubio's speech at 4 p.m. on March 25 will be in Bigelow Hall in the Miller Information Technology Center on UofL's Belknap campus. It's free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Those tickets can be requestedhere.
