Walmart at 18th and Broadway in Louisville Expected to be Announced Monday

A former Louisville Metro Councilwoman is saying a Walmart is coming to 18th and Broadway in Louisville, and an official announcement will be made Monday morning.Denise Bentley, who left the council in 2005, posted to Facebook Friday saying "Walmart is coming to 18th and Broadway!"

As WFPL first reported in November a so-called "Walmart Deal" has been pending for the former site of a Philip Morris plant at the southwest corner of Dixie Highway and Broadway in the California neighborhood. The news ignited a fierce debate among residents and community leaders about the big box retailer coming to the area. Some have emphasized that jobs and development is needed in the city's West End, while others are wary of Walmart's labor practices. It has been confirmed to WFPL that an announcement is planned for Monday morning.Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin, D-2, says Mayor Greg Fischer's office sent a message to city lawmakers Friday about an upcoming news conference, but did not share any further details."We assumed it is going to be a Walmart. That's all we've heard. I'm hoping it will be," says Shanklin. The Rev. Kevin Cosby, who is personal friends with the project's developers—Frank and Teresa Bridgewater—and who has been a cheerleader of the project tweeted Friday afternoon that the announcement is coming, and a major retailer will be moving in.

"Congratulations to Frank and Teresa Bridgewater whose advocacy 4 West Louisville will result n a major retailer serving r community," he posted.A spokesman for the mayor has declined to comment at this time. A local spokesperson for Walmart declined to comment as well.
