WFPL Wants (Needs?) Local Music for Station Breaks

Hey, Louisville. WFPL loves local music, and we want to feature more of it on air. No, we're not taking on our beloved sister station, WFPK. We're looking for fresh songs to play in between news segments and shows throughout the day.You know the music we use. You've been hearing it for years. It's the acoustic guitar riff that plays right after Ira Glass signs off, or that synth-and-drums number you hear underneath the credits on Sunday afternoons.   We're looking to replace these old music beds—that's what we call them—with pieces by local artists. So, if you are a musician, upload a 30 or 60 second instrumental piece of music to Soundcloud with the tag WFPLgoeslocal, and it could end up on air (we'll credit you, too. See below.)   Here are some guidelines:

  • Submit as many songs as you'd like. We use a lot of music on air.

  • We welcome all genres, tempos and styles.

  • The piece must be instrumental, but it doesn't matter if it's originally vocal-free, a short stretch of music without vocals, or an existing song with the vocal track removed.

  • The piece should be either 30 or 60 seconds long. Longer is fine, but let us know what part you'd like excerpted.

  • You should turn the downloading option on when uploading the track to Soundcloud.

  • Include your credits and website in the information with the Soundcloud upload.

  • By uploading with the tag WFPLgoeslocal, you give us rights to use the track on air. You retain ownership of the music, and may request that it be pulled at any time.

  • We'll link to all the music we use online, and whenever we can, we'll mention on air that the music is local and point to the online archive of songs. Unfortunately, we won't be able to say when exactly each piece is played or how often it's played.

So upload away. If you'd rather not use Soundcloud, you can send your piece directly to me at gbullard@wfpl.org. Just put “NEW WFPL MUSIC” in the subject line so I'll see it.
