What We're Reading | 4.14.2013

Each week, members of the WFPL News team spotlight interesting stories we've read and enjoyed, for your weekend reading pleasure:Gabe Bullard:I took a short, pre-pledge drive trip to Nashville last weekend. I know Elvis is more associated with Memphis, but heading to Music City made me wonder why I never really got into the King. I consulted the leading scholars on this topic and came up with this obituary by legendary music critic Lester Bangs (Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Almost Famous). It's pretty brutal, but also raises some interesting points about the role swinging hips played in our cultural evolution. Read Where Were You When Elvis Died.Devin Katayama:Fall in love with a gentleman named Stephen Johnstone, who has found his way to the winner's circle and presentation stand 18 separate times just by having a clever ploy or a quick scheme. He told his story to Louisville magazine. Read The Gate Crasher.Joseph Lord: The writer of this piece from the New Yorker creates a gmail account in 2004 and forgets about it—until now. There's plenty of entertainment (and wonderment) value in misdirected messages. Read Eighteen and Abandoned.

Joseph Lord is the online managing editor for WFPL.
