What We're Reading | 9.8.13

Each week, members of the WFPL News team spotlight interesting stories we've read and enjoyed, for your weekend reading pleasure:

Gabe Bullard:When we produced Unbound, I learned the ins and outs of what can or can't be broadcast. The subtleties are astounding (we spent 45 minutes debating how much of a description of a dog's bodily functions we could keep in a story). This piece from the Verge goes into the history of the bleep. It's $*@$ fascinating. Read Curses! The Bleep and the Birth of Modern American Censorship.Laura Ellis:I've been reading this long piece about Kendrick Johnson, a 17-year-old athlete who was found dead at school in Valdosta, Ga. The authorities said the death was accidental, but a second, independent autopsy shed doubt on that—and on the thoroughness of the initial investigation. If the details in this story are accurate, there's a lot that doesn't add up. Read A Death in Valdosta.Joseph Lord:Word gets out that Apple may launch its new operating system for devices sometime soon-ish and all the people criticizing the company for not revolutionizing anything recently become fans again. Much—so, so much—has been written about Apple, but the magazine Fast Company has a nice series of oral histories focusing on what's gone into making Apple's designs.
