When Will The Ohio River Recede? Forecasters Say Late Thursday

Jake Ryan

Forecasters expect the Ohio River to remain above the flood stage for most of this week after reaching its highest level in two decades on Sunday morning.

"The worst of the flooding is what you have right now,” the National Weather Service's Robert Szappamos said Monday morning. “Over the next few days [the river] will begin a slow fall."

The upper and lower parts of the McAlpine Locks and Dam likely won't go below flood stage until late Thursday or Friday, said Szappamos, a hydrometeorological technician with the National Weather Service in Louisville.

Melting snow and rain have caused flooding that swamped roads, businesses and homes in scattered low-lying areas across the Cincinnati region, including southeast Indiana and northern Kentucky.

This year's winter storms prompted schools and businesses to close, and Gov. Steve Beshear declared a state of emergency earlier this month after heavy snowfall lead to traffic backups and motor-vehicle rescues along I-65 and I-24.
