Will School Lunch Changes Really Make Students Healthier?

There’s a new push on for healthier school food across the country, in the form of a new law called the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, aimed at updating nutrition standards in the National School Lunch Program. Those new guidelines start taking effect this year. Will they have the desired result? We talked about it on Friday's Byline, with Anne Marshall, whose cover story in this week's LEO looks at how the changes will affect children's health. Also joining us was Janet Poppendieck, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She's also a research associate with the New York City Food Policy Center, and the author of Free for All: Fixing School Food in America.
