44 Miles Of Cable Barriers Coming To Kentucky

Forty-four additional miles of steel cable will be installed along interstate medians in Jefferson and five other Kentucky counties.  The installation, costing just over 3 million dollars, is scheduled to be completed by October.Transportation officials say the barriers are preferable to steel rails. They say the cables are easier to install and repair, and they are better designed to deflect vehicles that would otherwise cross into oncoming lanes of traffic.The cables have raised concerns among motorcyclists about what a high-speed impact with metal ropes would do to a rider. Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Robin Jenkins says there haven’t been any documented cases of motorcycle collisions with the cables in Kentucky."We have had a couple of vehicles that sit lower to the ground actually go under the cable barrier," she says. "I think there were two instances, and those are the vehicles that sit very low to the ground."Jenkins says the cables are thought to have prevented about 400 crossover accidents in Jefferson County.
