5K, Later Parade Added To Light Up Louisville

Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson Thursday announced several changes to attract larger crowds to the Light Up Louisville events on the day after Thanksgiving. The city will host an afternoon 5K run.  Abramson says the event will be followed by the Holiday Parade, which, for the first time, will be held in the evening."In the past we used to have the parade around 3:30, 4:00," says Abramson. "It didn't seem to be very well attended—it had sort of run it's course. So we were looking for a new way to, you know, ramp it up."Abramson says the continued support of sponsors has kept costs to the city at a minimum."We are not putting any cash in," he says. "The in-kind work that we will be doing will be police and public works and electrical folks and all those kinds of things. But we are putting no cash."The parade will be followed by the Christmas tree lighting. The city has not yet secured a tree for the display. Officials are once again seeking a donated fir that meets the proper size and shape criteria.
