Parents Lament Closure Of Youth Alive Program

The fathers of four boys killed in a car crash following an event sponsored by west Louisville youth program say they're saddened that the program has been forced to shut down.Youth Alive officials announced over the weekend that the decade-old program for at-risk youth in west Louisville is closing because of a lack of funds, pending lawsuits filed by insurance companies and an inability to renew its insurance coverage.The car crash occurred after a December Youth Alive outing. The four teen program members who died in the wreck were supposed to ride in a Youth Alive van, which was reportedly full. They instead got into a car driven by an acquaintance, which later struck a tree during a police pursuit.Marc Hampton lost three sons in the crash, but says he never wanted Youth Alive to discontinue its services."I don't hold everybody accountable at the staff because everybody wasn't there, so I'll leave it at that," Hampton said during a Wednesday press conference.Youth Alive provided mentoring and other services for more than 100 at-risk youthWest Louisville community leaders say they are holding discussions with another organization to possibly fill the void created by its Youth Alive's closing.
