ACLU Asks Police Department to Change Taser Policy

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky has asked Louisville’s police department to change its policies regarding the use of Tasers.Earlier this month, a Louisville resident was tasered as police tried to break up a fight and he later died. Though the exact cause of the man’s death hasn’t been released, ACLU of Kentucky Executive Director Michael Aldridge says it’s confirmation the devices aren’t ‘non-lethal’, as the manufacturer claims."There is a real concern that tasers are being used mainly in cases where deadly force wouldn’t be necessary, and they’re becoming a routine use of enforcement," says Aldridge.The ACLU has asked the LMPD to revise its policy to allow officers to use the electro-shock weapons only in circumstances that might require deadly force. Police Chief Robert White said in a statement he continually reviews the department’s policies and will change them when necessary.
