Americans File Tax Returns Ahead of Deadline

by Stephanie CrosbySome Americans are working to get their tax returns filed under the April 15 deadlines. IRS spokesperson Jodie Reynolds says if you’ve waited this long to get started, it may be best to request an extension.“The extension is an extension to file, not an extension to pay," says Reynolds. "If you file your tax return and you have a balance due, and you’re not able to pay your balance due, then we are able to work with you on that.”Reynolds says the process of filing an extension will give taxpayers an estimate to pay on time, to avoid penalties. She says for those who still want to file before the end of the day April 15, the quickest way to do so is online.
