Arguments Begin In Stinson Trial

Jury selection for the trial of former Pleasure Ridge Park High School football coach Jason Stinson is complete and opening arguments have been delivered.Prosecutor Leland Hulbert told the jury Thursday he aims to prove that Stinson is guilty of reckless homicide and wanton endangerment in the death of Max Gilpin, who collapsed from heat stroke during a practice last year and died three days later. Hulbert acknowledged that Gilpin had been taking the prescription amphetamine Adderall, but said that was not a factor in the player's death."No study in the United States or Europe has linked a low dose of Adderall to heat stroke," he said.Defense attorney Brian Butler says upcoming testimony will show that Adderall could have been a factor. He said Gilpin's death is not a criminal matter and called the trial a witch hunt."We don't have to prove anything to you," said Butler. "Your verdict forms are going to say 'guilty' or 'not guilty,' because it's their burden. This man is innocent!"Stinson is believed to be the first coach criminally charged in connection with a player's death.
