Arthritis

HIV and Bird Flu make headlines, but many health professionals are worried about arthritis, which the CDC ranks as the leading cause of disability in the US. Popularly considered an “old person’s disease,” it affects 46 million Americans, and in Kentucky, where 1 in 3 people have arthritis, 70% of those afflicted are under 65. Arthritis strikes all ages and ethnic groups, it causes depression and it drains the pocketbook—in 2003 total costs in the US reached $130 billion. By the year 2020 nearly 1 in 5 Americans will have the disease, and many states, including Kentucky, have launched public awareness campaigns to pull arthritis back onto our radar. Join us Monday when we learn about arthritis treatments, prevention and programs. Today's show is from our archives, so we won't be taking calls.
