Your Weekend Louisville Arts Picks: 'Metamorphosis,' Wax Fang And More

Walden Theatre

Update 11:17 a.m.:  The Friday performance of “Metamorphosis" has been canceled because of winter weather.

Earlier: There are so many choices for entertainment in our fair city — how do you know what’s worth the time, the money, the babysitter, the hangover?

I’m here to help. Starting this week, I’ll be giving the arts-minded some weekly suggestions of what to do in Louisville over the weekend.

It’s shaping up to be a snowy weekend here, so the siren song of couch-plus-TV will be especially strong. But I encourage you to get out (when it’s safe, of course) and take advantage of a few performances that are worth putting on your snow boots for.

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.” Thus begins Franz Kafka’s surreal novel, “Metamorphosis.” Walden Theatre is putting this strange tale onstage this weekend, in an adaptation by Louisville playwright Steve Moulds. I’m most curious to see how this story, which spends so much time inside the main character’s mind, translates to the stage. (Walden Theatre, 1123 Payne St., Jan. 21-30. Check their website before you go, as performances may be canceled due to the aforementioned snowstorm.)

It’s not often that a professional dance company welcomes the general public to a workshop, but that's what will happen this weekend with Stuart Pimsler Dance and Theater. The Minneapolis-based company is not only known for its witty and emotional performances, but for its work with education and health care initiatives. See the company perform at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. Saturday, then take your turn with the dancers at a community workshop on Sunday afternoon (two offerings, at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., advance registration required).

The Leon Russell show at Headliners planned for Thursday was postponed to Monday, but Friday night’s show there with Wax Fang is still on (as of this writing). They’re promising a big ol’ tribute to David Bowie, which would be enough to make me trek through the ice and snow. (9 p.m. at Headliners Music Hall, 1386 Lexington Rd.)

Netflix will be there when you get back.
