Last week, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced that some of the duties performed by Metro Animal Services will be privatized. A review committee made that recommendation after looking to other cities for ideas on how to improve the troubled agency. It found the best operation is Washoe County Animal Services in Reno, Nevada. Under a 2002 agreement, the county handles animal control and enforcement, while the Nevada Humane Society oversees animal care and adoptions. The agency also has a new shelter funded by a four cent property tax approved by voters.WFPL’s Rick Howlett spoke with its director, Mitch Schneider, about the operation.
