Beshear: Increasing Diversity Difficult in Tight Budget

Human resources professionals from across the state met today in Louisville for the Governor’s Equal Employment Opportunity Conference.Governor Steve Beshear spoke at the summit’s luncheon, assuring them he understands the role of diversity in the workplace.“Though there are fiscal limitations that deepen the challenge, we in state government will do this in every way we can, and at every chance we get," says Beshear, "whether it is by proclamation, appointment, promotion, or my signature on a bill.”Beshear says the state’s tight budget makes it hard to increase diversity in state government because many areas have hiring freezes. He says his administration would like to have at least 52-percent of the state workforce be women, and ten-percent be a minority.
