Beshear Reverses Language Policy For KSP Driver's Test

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeighKentucky Governor Steve Beshear has quickly reversed a new policy requiring the state's written driver’s license test to be offered only in English.Governor Beshear says as soon as he learned of Kentucky State Police plans to make the driver’s test English-only, effective June 1st, he immediately ordered the policy reversed. Beshear says the policy change was a mistake because Kentucky has always been a welcoming state for foreigners, and it has paid off.“We have been a state that assisted legal foreigners when they come here to live and to work to adapt to our way of life and to be able to get conveniences like driver’s licenses,” he said. Therefore, Beshear says the state will continue to offer the driver’s test in multiple languages. Test upgrades and budgetary reasons were cited for the policy change, but Beshear says the state will find a way to address those issues.Beshear says he remains confident in the management of KSP.
