Bodies Recovered of Two Blasters Killed in Ohio County Surface Mine Accident

The bodies of two men killed in an accidenton an Ohio County surface mine have been recovered. Rescue teams reached the bodies of 47-year-old Darrel Winstead of Madisonville and 23-year-old Samuel Lindsey of Mortons Gap around 1:15pm EDT.The men were blasters who worked for Mine Equipment and Mill Supply Company out of Dawson Spring, Kentucky. They were killed when a highwall collapsed at the Equality surface mine near Centertown, which is owned by Armstrong Coal.The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing will conduct preliminary interviews today, and will follow with formal interviews over the weekend. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration will also conduct an investigation. The mine will remain closed until the state's physical investigation is complete.
