Budget Revisions Nearly Complete, Alarm Fee Will Likely Be Dropped

by Gabe BullardMany proposed changes to Mayor Jerry Abramson's proposed budget for the next fiscal year will get their first public airing Wednesday. The Metro Council's Budget Committee has been revising the mayor's proposal and will announce the preliminary changes during its meeting. Vice chair Kelly Downard says the most notable changes are in the proposed allocations to external arts and social service agencies."I think we did a much better job as a council at looking at the needs of the external agencies than the administration did," he says. "If I didn't know better, I'd say they knew we were going to do it and left it that way."Downard says the council will likely eliminate the $1.5 million in revenue that was to come from a proposed fee on burglar alarms. He says money has been moved from other areas, and some alternate sources of revenue may be explored. That could include the reserve for fleet vehicles, land sales and a rebate from arena construction. The full council will vote on a final budget Thursday.
