Bunning, McConnell To Attend Louisville GOP Dinner

Kentucky Republicans will gather Saturday evening in Louisville for the annual GOP State Lincoln Day Dinner. This year's event is getting increased attention because of the unfolding drama of the 2010 U.S. Senate race. There's been speculation that incumbent Jim Bunning will use the occasion to announce his retirement and pass the baton to his politcal protege, Secretary of State Trey Grayson. But longtime Kentucky political writer Al Cross says he doesn't think it will happen."Jim Bunning wants to do everything on his own terms," Cross said. "Some people might think it might provide big show, be a dramatic way to get out and give a boost to Grayson's candidacy. But I also think it would be seen as surrendering too soon to McConnell and the others who want (Bunning) out."Bunning says he's still a candidate for re-election, even though he encouraged Grayson to form an exploratory committee for the race.Bunning's Senate colleague, Mitch McConnell, has not endorsed his bid for a third term. McConnell is also expected to attend the dinner.(Thanks to Lisa Autry, Kentucky Public Radio/WKYU, Bowling Green)
