Candidates Turn Out To File, Many Are Republicans

It could be a record turnout for candidate filings for Kentucky's 2010 primaries. The Secretary of State's office won't know if this year set a new record until county filings are tabulated. But spokesperson Les Fugate says there were a few surprises. Notably, more Republicans filed than Democrats. Fugate attributes the jump to unhappiness with current elected officials and the downed economy."A lot of these positions are well-paid jobs," he says. "So a lot of individuals out there who are filing for office see this as a great way to have a good source of income."Five Republicans have filed to run against Democrat John Yarmuth in the 3rd Congressional District. Six Republicans are running against Democrat Ben Chandler in the 6th District.Eleven candidates are seeking the Senate seat currently held by Republican Jim Bunning, who is retiring.
