Capitol Dome Project Continues

From Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeighThe rotunda of Kentucky’s historic State Capitol is now officially closed, and will remain off-limits for at least three months. The closure is necessary so the rotunda’s interior dome can get a fresh coat of paint and some new lighting.David Buchta of Historic Properties is closely monitoring the almost half-million dollar renovation project.“We’re erecting the base for the scaffolding, after we completely protected the floor with a three-layered coating," says Buchta. "We’ve encased all the statues with frame-board and plywood. And then we’re erecting the scaffolding on top of that, up to 174-feet in the dome.”The rotunda’s four, original chandeliers are also being restored and have already been removed. It’s all part of an effort to spruce-up the rotunda for next year’s centennial celebration for the building, which was dedicated in 1910.
