Cause of Broken Water Main Still Unknown

It could be days before the Louisville Water Company knows why a water main on the University of Louisville campus burst last night. The 48-inch pipe broke in the evening, causing flooding, a drop in water pressure and possible contamination of drinking water. In the 24 hours after the break, crews restored pressure to affected water customers, but still could not figure out why the 80-year-old pipe broke."What we need to do is get to the actual pipe that broke. And that's proving to be a very delicate operation because where the pipe broke, where it is located, is very close to the approach to a bridge that's on Eastern Parkway," says water company spokeswoman Kelley Dearing-Smith.Dearing-Smith says the pipe was in fine condition at the last regular infrastructure check.A boil advisory remains in effect for the area north of the Watterson and between Ninth Street and Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue.Humana and the U of L Belknap campus were both closed Tuesday, but will plan to re-open Wednesday. Humana employees can call the company hotline (1-800-626-1590) for further details. U of L faculty and students are encouraged to check the school's website for details.
