Chuchill Downs Has Full Barns for Fall Meet

The Fall Meet at Churchill Downs starts in two days and track officials there say they’ve been able to round up a quality slate of races. As most Kentucky tracks have been lobbying for expanded gambling, one of the claims from the horse industry has been that Bluegrass horsemen are leaving the Commonwealth for other racing states that offer higher purses because they are infused with gaming revenue. But Churchill spokesperson Darren Rogers says they’ve been able to fill their barns for the Fall Meet, especially with two-year-olds.“Traditionally, the two-year-old racing in the fall is well supported here at Churchill Downs," says Rogers, "but by no means does that mean next spring we won’t be facing our challenges that we continue to face as an industry.”The 21-day meet ends November 28th, and will not include night racing. Rogers says officials are in the process of reviewing bids to install permanent lighting at the historic track.
