City To Hire Private Contractors For Debris Cleanup

Louisville Metro Government is taking bids for private contractors to help city crews clean up debris from January's ice storm.Twenty-four city crews are currently picking up debris from major thoroughfares and streets. Mayor's spokesperson Kerri Richardson says the private contractors will be asked to clean up debris in unincorporated areas."We have mandated that that cleanup for those areas must be complete by Derby," she says. "So we hope that we'll actually have extra crews from private contractors on the roads within a week or so."Richardson says the city hopes to have the contractors chosen and on the job in the next seven to ten days. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay for 75 percent of the clean-up costs and the state will pay for 12 and-a-half percent. Congressman John Yarmuth has asked FEMA to cover all of the costs.
