Consultant To Review JCPS Assignment Plans

The Jefferson County Board of Education has voted to hire a consultant to review the district's student assignment plans and recommend any adjustments.The board adopted a new assignment plans for elementary--and middle and high schools--following a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that declared the previous desegregation policy unconstitutional.The elementary plan is in its second year, but has come under scrutiny following parents' complaints about school assignments and long bus rides. Implementation of the middle and high school plans werepostponed until next year and the following year, respectively.At its regular meeting last (Monday) night, the board also heard a final report from Pat Todd, who's retiring from her job as the district's director of student assignments effective at the end of the month.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
