Corrections Director Plans To Cut Costs Without Furloughs

The head of Louisville Metro Corrections says many of his employees won’t be furloughed, and will instead find other ways to trim his department’s budget.Last month, the mayor asked all city employees to take four furlough days. Several unions have agreed to follow the plan, but Corrections Director Mark Bolton says it’s not possible for his department to furlough most of its 400 employees.Bolton says to maintain public safety, any furloughed employees would have to be replaced by workers earning overtime. He’s still required to cut 400 thousand dollars from his budget, and Bolton says most of those cuts will come from employee suggestions.“Those ideas that have merit, that have some validity to them, that are going to help create a cost-saving environment, we’re going to move forward and I’m very confident that we’re going to get to that number," he says.Bolton says he’ll also cut costs by restructuring a training session.
