Council Leaders React to MSD Audit

Leaders in the Louisville Metro Council are responding to the blistering state audit that found several problems with the Metropolitan Sewer District, which is being overhauled by Mayor Greg Fischer. Earlier this year, city lawmakers pressured the agency to adopt an ethics policy amid allegations of impropriety. At the time, MSD attorney Larry Zielke told the board the policy as written was similar to the city's ethics ordinance.From Council President Jim King, D-10: "This audit is disappointing and the Auditor’s findings show it is time for change in MSD’s board oversight and business practices. While the State Auditor found no fault in the day to day operations of MSD, the agency’s business practices in these tight economic times must be improved to restore confidence to rate payers that their money is being spent wisely. All public agencies must be held accountable for how business is conducted. The Metro Council will offer its support and any assistance as the organization begins correcting the concerns which have been raised."Councilwoman Madonna Flood, D-24, Majority Caucus Chair: "We have an opportunity with this report. The goal should be to elevate business practices to the level of efficiency found in day to day operations of MSD. While many see great improvements in drainage and sewage treatment near their homes and other areas, they should also feel that business operations are striving to be efficient and accountable as MSD moves forward with its available resources."Councilman Ken Fleming, R-7, Minority Caucus Chair: "The State Auditor's report shines light on the deficiencies of MSD's ethics, transparency and accountability.
