The Louisville Metro Council is approaching its deadline to hammer-out and approve a final city budget, and members want to sneak in some extra funding for the city’s roads.
Following a recent public works committee meeting, members decided the state of the city's roads require more than the $6 million budgeted in Mayor Greg Fischer's proposal.
Budget Committee Vice Chair Kelly Downard, a Republican, said he believes the council can come up with $5 million more by moving around money in the spending plan.
Downard has asked members to come up with suggestions.
“They were all open to the idea to start with,” Downard said. “The good news is that they are coming up with ideas and we’ve had several of them.”
“I feel comfortable that we will be able to find at least the three million (dollars) and maybe possibly get close to the five."
But he couldn't say where the cuts would come from because nothing is final. The council needs to come to an agreement in a week.
The council votes on a final budget next Thursday.
