Council Panel Begins Redistricting Discussions

Early discussions are underway on how to go about redrawing Louisville’s Metro Council districts, as required after the 2010 U.S. Census. A council workgroup has begun meetings on the process. Panel chair Rick Blackwell says the real work won’t begin until census figures are released next month. He says it’s been generally thought that most of the population growth has occurred in eastern Jefferson County, but that might be too broad of an assumption."Most council members can find at least a neighborhood or two that has grown or even brand new neighborhoods in their districts. That’s true in my area, in Pleasure Ridge (Park), we’ve had a couple of new neighborhoods and a couple that have expanded significantly," he said.Blackwell said at its first meeting, the workgroup discussed the possibility of hiring an outside expert to help with the process, as was the case when the original council districts were drawn nearly a decade ago.The workgroup’s next meeting is March 21.
