Council Approves Measure To Rename Portion Of 34th Street For Coleman

The Louisville Metro Council has approved an ordinance renaming a section of 34th Street in honor of the late civil rights leader Reverend Louis Coleman. The measure was sponsored by Councilwomen Judy Green and Cheri Bryant Hamilton, who originally sought to have the entire street renamed. That drew objections from some Portland-area residents, who were either concerned about confusion it might cause, or were opposed to the idea of honoring the sometimes controversial Coleman. The council’s Democratic Caucus spokesperson, Tony Hyatt, says a compromise limits the renaming to 34th Street from Market Street south to the Park DuValle neighborhood."The planning commission has already held a public hearing that it needed to and made a recommendation to the council.  Once it’s signed by the mayor it will go to public works, and they’ll officially begin changing the actual signage on that section of 34th Street,"  he said. The street will be one of several in Louisville to go by multiple names. For example, Virginia Avenue is called Oak Street east of 26th Street and River Park Drive is called Chestnut Street east of 28th Street. All 20 members of the council who voted on the renaming during Thursday's meeting voted in favor of the measure.
