Daniels Backs Sentencing Recommendations

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels says he enthusiastically supports the recommendations that emerged from a review of Indiana's criminal code and sentencing policies. It was conducted by the Pew Center on the States and the Council of State Governments Justice Center.Daniels says he agrees with the report's call for more sentencing options for the least serious felony offenses, such as first-time drug and theft crimes. "We've got too many of those prisoners, not the real bad guys. We want to concentrate our resources on the really dangerous people," Daniels said in a phone interview with WFPL.The review found that Indiana's prison population grew by more than 40-percent, or around 8,000 offenders, over the past decade, with the growth due mainly to the incarceration of more property and drug offenders. The recommendations are being sent to the Indiana General Assembly, which convenes next month.
