Democrat Sweeney Enters Senate Race

Another Democrat has entered the 2010 race for U.S. Senator from Kentucky.53-year-old Maurice Sweeney announced the start of his campaign today in Louisville. The most well-known candidates he’ll face in the primary are Attorney General Jack Conway and Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo.Sweeney says he was encouraged to run even though both Conway and Mongiardo have been in the race for months now and have raised a lot of money.“I’ve talked to a lot of people who have given me the encouragement that it’s certainly not too late," says Sweeney, "I don’t believe I got in the race late, I just think they got in it early.”Conway joined the race in mid-April and recently reported second quarter earnings of over a million dollars. Mongiardo announced he was running for the seat in January, and reported fundraising in the second quarter of about 300-thousand dollars. Sweeney says he has no cash on hand, and is starting his fundraising today.Also in the democratic primary is former U.S. Customs Agent Darlene Fitzgerald Price.The four are vying to claim the Senate seat currently held by Republican Senator Jim Bunning, who could face a challenge from Republican Secretary of State Trey Grayson.
