Democratic Supporters Attend Derby

While the horses drew a near-record crowd to Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby was also a time for political statements.Both Democratic Presidential nominees endorsed horses this year.Hillary Clinton endorsed filly Eight Belles while Barack Obama endorsed colt Colonel John. The Obama campaign also offered limited-edition Kentucky Derby campaign buttons.Both campaigns also had representatives in attendance. Chelsea Clinton was there to support her mother while New Mexico and Kansas governors Bill Richardson and Kathleen Sebelius were on hand for Obama.Covington native Dave Meyer returned to Kentucky from his home in Washington DC to watch the Derby and to support his candidate.“Even though I support Obama I’m glad that many of the Clinton supporters were out in force today. I think it’s good for the state of Kentucky and it’s good for the primaries," he said.Kentucky’s primary is May 20th, Indiana’s is Tuesday.
