Despite Reports, Metro Parks Says Extreme Park Restroom Remains Open

Officials with Louisville Metro Parks have not closed the restroom at the popular Extreme Park, despite reports over the weekend that it was shut down permanently. On Sunday, the Courier-Journal reported that the department was closing the restroom for good "because of continuing vandalism to the building."Metro Parks spokesperson Margaret Brosko told WPFL News, however, there were never any plans to close the bathroom. She said the newspaper wouldn't divulge how it got the information, but that the C-J ran a retraction Tuesday."The good news is it's not closed," says Brosko.A source with the C-J says that a reporter saw on the parks department website that the restroom was closed "indefinitely" and that Brosko had told the reporter it was a mistake.Since it opened in 2002, the skate park is regularly closed by Metro Government officials in order to remove graffiti and make repairs. The city admits that Extreme Park is hit with vandalism more than most parks, but its users have stepped forward to take ownership of its maintenance."There's a group that use the park on a regular basis who've come to the forefront and have said they use the park all the time and want to help out," says Brosko. "They are our eyes and ears at the park and help us paint over graffiti immediately, working hand-in-hand with our maintenance crews out there."
