Doris Kearns Goodwin is a historian with a wide-angle lens. She takes on many of America’s greatest historical periods and leaders, and provides rich layers of context. She did this with her previous book, “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.” This book helped inspire Steven Spielberg's film, “Lincoln,” which starred Daniel Day Lewis.Kearns Goodwin won the Pulitzer Prize for another books hers called, “No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War IIHer new book returns to the early 20th century, known as the progressive era, when America was dealing with the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution. It’s called, “The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism.”I recently spoke with Doris Kearns Goodwin about her new book, her fascination with Teddy Roosevelt, and a time in America that doesn’t sound too dissimilar to the present day.
