Engineering Students Turn Cooking Oil Into Biofuel

Chemical engineering students at the University of Louisville’s Speed School of Engineering are producing biofuel from used cooking oil at the campus’s eateries.Chemical engineering professor Eric Berson says they’re using it to power the university’s shuttle bus. He says students are still perfecting the technique, and will increase the blend of biofuel as they progress.“We also have plans to do nice research projects in the future as we move forward, where we take waste products from this process," says Berson, "for example we can take glycerin and generate methane which can be used to generate electricity, so we can even extend the sustainability even further.”Right now, students are producing biodiesel batches fifty gallons at a time.
