Farm Bureau Meeting In Louisville This Week

Delegates from across the commonwealth will be in Louisville this week for the Kentucky Farm Bureau's annual meeting. The delegates will outline the bureau's legislative goals for the upcoming year.Every year, delegates meet to discuss business, receive awards, elect officers and to determine their legislative priorities.Executive Vice President David Beck says the bureau may revise its stance on certain provisions in the healthcare overhaul law, but the main focus will likely be the upcoming farm bill. Beck says the midterm elections will affect how the bureau works with federal lawmakers to shape the legislation."There'll be new leadership on the Senate ag committee. There'll be new leadership on the House ag committee," he says. "So there'll probably be some discussions about that."A food safety bill recently passed by the Senate and supported by the organization may not be discussed, since Beck says it appears to be heading in a favorable direction. Senator Mitch McConnell will speak Saturday at the meeting. He voted against the bill, which now goes to the House.6th District Congressman Ben Chandler will also speak with attendees. Agriculture Commissioner and candidate for Lieutenant Governor Ritchie Farmer will also make an appearance as part of his duties as commissioner.
