Fayette County Nears End of School Superintendent Search

by Brenna Angel, Kentucky Public RadioTwo of Kentucky’s largest counties are both wrapping up their search for a superintendent at the same time. The Jefferson County Board of Education has interviewed two finalists and plans to meet next week to set a hiring timeline. Fayette County could have their decision as soon as tomorrow.Tom Shelton is currently superintendent of Daviess County, and is one of the finalists for the job. He addressed a public forum yesterday evening and says Fayette County Public Schools already has a great network of programs and services he wants to build on.“Ultimately we have to be flexible and recognize that the world is changing very rapidly and so therefore student needs change correspondingly,” he said. “And so we have to make sure that we’re flexible enough to adjust to that.”He added that he believes Fayette County can become the best school district in the country.“It can’t be purely my vision or my goal, it’s gotta be the goal or vision of the community,” Shelton said. “And my job would be to support what the board and what the community would want to see there.”Shelton had a full day of interviews yesterday, similar to what candidate Lu Young faced earlier this week. Today is Clark County superintendent Elaine Farris’ turn to meet with community groups and stakeholders.
