Federal Government Cites Five Kentucky Mines in August Inspections

The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration has cited five Kentucky coal mines for safety violations. They were among 20 nationwide with a history of compliance problems targeted in MSHA's special impact inspections.The mines cited were the Superior Mining Company's Number 1 mine in Pike County, TRC Mining’s Mine Number 2 in Letcher County and three mines operated by James River Coal. MSHA issued a total of 129 orders and citations to the Kentucky mines.MSHA began the special impact inspections after the explosion last year at the Upper Big Branch Mine inWest Virginia killed twenty-nine miners. Since then, the agency says it's conducted more than 300 impact inspections, which have resulted in nearly 6,000 citations.
