Frankfort Prepares for 76th Annual Governor's Derby Celebration

by Josh James, Kentucky Public RadioThe annual Governor's Derby Celebration is a long-running tradition and this year organizers say they anticipate ideal weather and a large turnout. For 76 years, groups large and small have gathered at Kentucky's capitol to celebrate Derby Day.Kerri Richardson is a spokeswoman for Governor Steve Beshear. She says a change in location has added some new flavor to the event.“Last year we moved the celebration to downtown Frankfort,” she said. “And that allows folks to not only visit the downtown shops and restaurants, but they’ll also be able to purchase some breakfast foods while they’re there, and visit some of the Kentucky craft artists.”The 2012 Derby Celebration will also offer entertainment, children's activities, and plenty of food. Several local bands will take the stage in front of the Old State Capitol starting at 10 AM Saturday. The event begins at 9 AM and runs until 1 in the afternoon.
